Central Air Conditioning Unit Not Cooling

Last night my temperature was set on 77 degrees on my Central AC towards the end of the night, the house started getting hotter, I looked at the AC Thermostat and it read 83 degrees in the home and it never cooled off. This morning it still read 83 degrees and still warm and I turned the Central AC off. I could still hear the unit running from outdoors, so i was wondering could this be the compressor or something else The unit was installed in March 2003 when I built my home, so I thought it was muich too soon for the compressor to be going on within this time frame of 5 years. do you have any suggestions or conclusions of what the problem could be?

are you sure the compressor was running,or just the fan in outside unit,,when running you should be ables to feel the copper lines comng into the house, the largest line should get pretty cold after a few minutes,,this will tell you the compressor is running,,if not call the local man with the a/c company

Is your AC using a digital thermostat? I do not much about Ac but I canprove one for sure... We are inflorida and we need ac almoist all year. aparaently our digital thermostat went crazy, lost the settings, the program etc... and a reset will not do... we were experincing the same issue as you the air handler inside the house will keep running but the big box outside will try to start on and off ... we ended up buying the outside unit for $800 when we really did not needed.. because even with the new unit the problem was the same. we changed back to a $9.99 manual thormostatt from Wal-mart and viola! all problems solved. We did not need a new outside unit and our AC guy did not tel us that, of course! he wanted to take advanatage of the situation. Please relate this message to others we are al being riped off from those AC technicians...

realy sorry to hear about what happened to you,,its people like that ,that give a profession a bad name,,,,I advise people to get a second opinion,,because you can be unlucky enough to get someone that doesn`t know all he clams to know, would you get a heart transplant without a second opinion,,,I wouldn`t,.. don`t pass the word around that all ac technicians are ripoff artist,,,it will cause knowbody to have working a/c`s because of misstrust, just bad mouth the one that ripped you off

I am having similar problems, and would be very interested and thankful for any advice. As for the thermostat issue, there are crooks everywhere, however, I don't think it's right to put down an entire profession for the actions of a few bad seeds.....especially here, where it seems to me that the techs who come here and give their opinions and advise (FREE) are trying to help. Anyway, thanks in advance!
