Central Air Acting Up

Ok, I am sure there are some poeple on here who work for Air Conditioning companies, and I need their help/advice.

Over the last few weeks at random, my a/c will just switch off. The air handler in the house stays on. The thermostat stills says cool, and even the unit outside is still on, but if you go outside and hold your hand over it, there is cool air comming out from it. If you shut the power off to the A/C/Heat, and mess with it for a while, it will cut back on and blow cool, but only for a little while.

Then it repeats all over again. It has on a few occasions turned the heat on, so I physically turned the gas off to the furnace. I have tried multiple thermostats so I don't think that is it. Perhaps the wiring, but the doesn't explain why it works sometimes and doesn't other. This morining it was 68 deg. inside, the a/c has stayed on continuosly and it is now 74.

Also, it only seems to act up on the weekends when we are home using the a/c all day. During the week it is on a prog. thermostat so it is turned off all day until the evening.

Any help is appreciated.

-Dave

From what you've said here, I suspect the stat settings on the weekend may not be correct.

Nope, that isn't it. I switched out the programable one with the normal one, and it still doesn't work.

:UPDATE:

Went out for the evening with the a/c on as it had been all day, and the house at 81 deg. Came home from dinner and it's 67 deg. and the a/c is blowing very cold. Any ideas?

The compressor in the condensing unit out side has internal protectors in it to cut it off for different reasons. It may have a high pressure cut off switch. a low pressure cut off switch. or an interal thermal protector. Running while on low or too much freon can cause these things to happen. The high and low pressure switches should be automatic reset in just a few minutes. The internal protector can take as much as an hour or more to reset. If the unit is cutting off because of high or low pressure and then coming back on several times this can cause the internal switch to open. Anothe thing that can cause the internal to open is the unit over heting because of a dirty outside coil. Turn off the power and wash the coil with water from a hose........then try it. If this is not the problem then re-post.
