I have the same problem as the person who asked about getting their wall heater to light. The answer was to make sure the flame was touching the thermocouple.. . But how do you do that? I can't make the flame higher, so do I move the thermocouple lower and what does a thermocouple look like anyway?

I've banged on the governor and moved wires around to disturb things a little. That seemed to get the pilot light to stay on a second or two longer before going out after I release the button. And I've held the button down for long periods.

Could low gas pressure cause this problem with the pilot light not staying on? There is another wall heater on the same system and I think my gas line service is only 3/4" pipe. I notice my stove took a long time to light a couple days ago.

Also, this wall heater worked perfectly when it was turned off two years ago. It hasn't been lit since then and like all mechanical things disuse usually causes some kind of deterioration. What has deteriorated with my unit, do you think?

Also, why do heater problems only happen when it's cold?

What you have described is a problem with the thermocouple, the thermocouple is a small wire looking piece that runs from your pilot to the gas valve. It is a Tube about the size of a toothpick That has just a little larger end at the pilot end and it has a small nut at the gas valve end. To replace it you are more than likely going to have to take the pilot assembly out of the furnace. There will be one or more screws holding the pilot to the burner. And also a 1/4 inch gas line that you will have to disconnect.

If you have a millivolt system then you do not have a thermocouple, that will be another problem
