air conditioning for an interior townhouse

Hi there, My husband and I are considering purchasing a townhouse that has never had aircon put in. The townhouse is 20 yrs old. 1600 sq. feet total for lower and upper level. It is NOT an end unit....and has another townhouse attatched on either side. We are wondering what kind of central system we can use if any? OR what is our alternative OTHER than ugly window units.
