Air conditioner fan and heater fan do not work

My air conditioner will not come on. I check to see if the furnace fan would come on with the heat setting and it also does not work. I checked all the outside circuit breakers and took the yellow wire on the thermostat and touched it 2 minutes to the red wire, the AC motor did not start. I suspect it the problem is at the furnace. It is in the attic and I don't have a ladder today to get up there, but will have one tomorrow. Any suggestions on what to check when I get up there?
Update, the fan started to work, not sure why. Is there a circuit protector or something that could reset it self?

check your circuit breakers in electric box,,,,,,,turn completely off and back on,,,,,try furnace again
