Muffled Hearing In Left Ear With A Low Tone Ringing
And every time someone talks it sounds like a child's slide whistle or like a tiny alien in my ear translating the words into a different language, yes I'm aware that sounds way silly and I have no mental illnesses or anything, just trying to explain what's going on the best way possible. I haven't had a cold, no wax build-up I haven't been swimming since I have a newborn that I can't take with me to the pool. I've had this problem for a week and it's just not going away, I'm starting to wonder if I'm losing my hearing, which seems unlikely since I'm only 22. Anybody have any ideas?

Unfortunately I don't know what causes it, but I'm pretty sure I've had the same symptoms you're describing on several occasions. The good news is that it has always gone away on its own after a while (usually just a few hours, but occasionally only after several days or even a week). For a while I had the hardest time trying to describe what I was hearing (though your description is actually pretty good. LOL!) Then I finally realized that I'm hearing all the sounds at two or three different pitches simultaneously, like the sound is being modulated by an auto-tuner or something. It's equivalent to hitting several adjacent keys on a really badly out-of-tune piano. Plus, it sounds like some pitches get delayed a few milliseconds. The result is that when I try to listen to somebody speaking, I can hear the sound, but it feels like I'm a third-party observer listening in on a conversation through a box fan. It's a very bizarre feeling!

My theory is that it's somehow related to migraines. I occasionally get migraines, but thankfully NOT with a headache (knock on wood). My migraines usually manifest themselves only with visual aura (sort of like stars or flashing lights or flashing blotches in my vision - a pretty common migraine symptom). When it happens, I get that same third-person, out-of-body kind of feeling. I attribute my weird hearing symptom to the same thing. I have no idea if I'm right or if that's even plausible, but it feels analogous to me.

By the way, whenever it's ever happened to me, it's usually been at times when I was really tired and/or stressed. If you have a newborn, I'm guessing you're more than a little sleep-deprived these days!

I'm just glad that at least someone understands, I keep trying to explain this to my mother and she looks at me as if I'm crazy, my husband keeps telling me that it should go away. I don't get migraines (thank god, I know how terrible they can be). I called to make an appointment with my GP but they can't see me for another 7 weeks. It's just so confusing and honestly driving me nuts because it gets worse the louder the sound and when my baby starts to cry it's gotten so bad that the tune itself is at such a pitch that it hurts my ear.

I think this is somewhat common. I've felt it on rare occasions. I don't get migraines, but thought it might be related to hormonal surges? You say you have a newborn, so I wonder...
You could look into having your eustacian tube checked for collapse (not draining normally down the throat), or also see a dentist. I had ear pain for years that was simply a nerve from a molar that didn't hurt, but when I had the tooth worked on, the ear pain stopped instantly.

You could have a long standing bacterial sinus infection that would respond to antibiotics. That's the underwater feeling - sinuses are full, and not from a virus or allergy, especially on one side only.

You have a newborn? Sounds like an anxiety attack, my man. If you're 22 and just had a child, then I'm guessing that the cogs inside your head are moving a bit more rapidly than normal. Anxiety attacks can manifest in MANY different ways. Something to think about and look into.

I just had this same weird thing happen in my right ear. Ive been trying to yawn it out for over a day now and the ringing, hearing multiple pitches and sounding like my ear is underwater are my exact symptoms. I want to try putting warm water in my ear for a couple minutes to see if it loosens anything up. Plugging your nose and blowing out your ears doesn't work. I noticed that the day it started I was "Hawking loogeys" lol maybe connected... Idk its really bothersome though lol.

Did anyone get any relief to this? I am having the same problem and it has been going on for about 4 days... going crazy trying to find something that works. I hope it goes away - I went to three different doctors and they all said it should go away...

I've just had a bad chest infection and as a result I've been left with muffled sound, really loud high pitched tinnitus and when I hear a high pitched sound (usually music) its warbling and out of tune... Its really weird but I'm guessing its just the ear being blocked or inflamed in some way and just rectifying itself I've been taking Amoxicillin for 2 weeks and the chest infection has nearly cleared but I'm still left with this... I'll post if it goes and how long it took.

This just happened to me last night. My ear started ringing (which happens from time to time), then the ringing stopped, but my hearing didn't come back like it usually does. Now it feels like my left ear is under water or I'm holding a cup over my ear. My doctor said that my ear looks fine, and to give it a week or so. If it doesn't get better, or gets worse, then he referred me to a Neurotologist who specializes in ear/brain connections.

My sister was going through the same problem she just kept ignoring it and it kept coming back more often. She then went to the doctors and he told her it was liquid in her ears. He gave her some tinnitus control ear drops and about a week it went away. He told her it's caused by colds or sinus infections when you get drainage they go back to your ears. So it could be this. Well good luck hope you feel better.

Good news is, it does go away, for me usually within a day or two but very annoying. I find it happens at the same time I get congested indicating it is probably from allegeries. I went to a specialist and even had an MRI and they found nothing causing it but allergies. I actually got it again last night after being at an all day concert and the air turned cooler later in the evening. Woke up this morning with the muffled hearing, slight ringing in both ears, and congested.
