Hearing aids, good and bad

Asked Mar 22, 2007, 08:17 PM — 17 Answers
My wife needs a hearing aid. Tests show nerve loss, she hears clearly, but at only about 40% level. Has had professional testing done. I would like for you who use hearing aids to either recommend or warn against various makes and models, ie: (if you would be so kind), how much did yours cost, how long have you had it, etc. I know absolutely nothing about the things! Thank You for your replies.

I will say for my father ( he passed a year ago) we spent a few thousand dollars per hearing aid, and tried several over several years. None of them worked well for him.

I would see if they give any warrant or guarntee they will work for the patient

I have had mine for about 11 years. I'd suggest Eli's DirX or the Artis and Cielo models. I believe they should be in the thousands range. I'm not how much mine but like I said it could've been a thousand dollars or more.

I forgot to mention that I don't wear any of the models I suggested so I don't know if they will work for you.

So, what are you currently using? Are you happy with them?

I'm using the Phonak Power Maxx kind. Yeah, I'm very happy with them.

Here's another tip: Avoid areas full of moisture as they tend to damage hearing aids. If it's hard to do that. I suggest you buy a dehumidifier.

I completely missed something! I have not worn mine for 11 years, I have worn hearing aids for about 11 years! Several months ago, my right hearing aid wasn't working so I had to get a new pair of hearing aids.

I have tried and been disappointed with hearing aids before. The day you posted, I picked up a pair of Siemens CIELO ITE hearing aids. Same old story, they do a great job of picking up every click of my keyboard, but I still struggle to understand what people are saying.

They actually have Siemens Cielo ITE hearing aids? I assumed it was only the BTE kind. Maybe you're experiencing feedback? I think that those with severe hearing losses experience quite a bit of feedback when wearing ITE hearing aids.

Well, we plan to go to an audi next Thurs. He uses Siemens, but talks like he will recommend a bte with 2 mics, button controlled rear mike, and a volume wheel and open tip in the ear. About $1400 ea I think. This man seems to have a good rep locally.
