External HDD Error "Insert A Disk Into Drive"
I have a WD HDD installed into an external case. When I plug it into a USB port, a drive letter appears in "System Hardware", and it says the driver is OK and the device is working properly. It even gives me the model number of the WD drive! Driver Agent even confirms that the driver is OK.

However, when I try to access it, it says: "Please Insert A Disk Into Drive I:." I have tried it on another computer, with the same results (but different drive letter, of course).

I put this drive into this case over a year ago, and don't remember what happened initially. I just never got around to using it. Don't remember if the case came with an installation disk or what. Now I have time and the need for it, and it just ain't going to work.

Obviously the computers are treating this thing like a card reader or floppy or something.

Running Windows XP. Two different editions (professional and media center) give the same results.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,

    And it works before?
This look same like question "External HDD recognized, but not visible in MY Computer "

    Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk management
In window you will see disks connected to PC. First, on right side down, under main window, you can see colums with... Disk 0 Basic etc. next row is Disk 1... rightclick on your connected disk in first column (cell) and in menu appears some options, like format, Initialise (or connect?). If you can't format it, hdd is not initialised, so do this. Then you can format it, or, if there are some data, you can read them.

    Maybe, it can help you.
