My daughter is in a drama production this weekend and has been asked to color her blonde hair to brown. She has dyed her natural "dishwater blonde" hair a few times before to lighten it. We were in Sally's yesterday and picked up a semi-permanent color in dark warm brown. I've read here in several threads that it is not good to use brown dye on blonde hair and that reversing the color could be impossible or have disastrous results. Unfortunately, she is playing a character that MUST have brown hair to fit the story and a wig is not an option. Can anyone suggest the best way to accomplish this before we make a mistake? Thanks.
If she's going from a blonde to a brunette, her hair might have a green sort of cast after. To avoid this, she will need to put on a reddish sort of colour (semi or temp), then apply the warm brown over it. The red will counteract the green.
Wash the hair with a mild, non moisturising shampoo. Towel dry it, then apply the reddy colour on the damp hair, leave it on and then apply the warm brown over the reddy colour (hair should still be damp).
Hope that helps.
