itchy scalp

I don't know if its from hard water or something else, but my scalp is so itchy it is literally driving me nuts. I sit at my desk and scratch so hard, I'm sure co-workers think I have some kind of bugs. Is there anything I can put on my scalp to relieve this? I've tried a couple of products that Sally's beauty products recommended and it didn't help. I have also put conditioner on my hair before I go to bed, and that is basically not working either. Please someone help.

Putting conditioner on your hair before you go to bed is probably making your scalp more itchy. Have you tried tea tree oil or shampoo with that in it? Paul mitchell makes a good one.

ZoeMarie agrees: yep
grets agrees: might be accurate, just not in this case.

Try something with tea tree oil. It helped my brother. My husband also has this problem but he just uses Head & Shoulders now

Yes, I have tried Paul Mitchel tea tree, both shampoo and conditioner. I have also tried an olive oil one that was highly recommended. Didn't work. I can tell you that the conditioner overnight does NOT make my scalp more itchy. It helps, but not for long. I need to find a conditioner you could leave in. I have also try head and shoulders, actually using it now. again, its not dandruff...Its just the worse itching I've ever had.

I didn't want you to get the wrong idea. I wasn't saying that it was dandruff, but it sounded like dry skin which can cause dandruff. Are you using a different shampoo? Maybe you're allergic to something?

One cause of excessive dry itchy scalp may be alcohol use/abuse. If you're drinking a lot, this could be the cause, especially if you're experiencing dry skin too. If this is your case, google "alcohol use and dry skin/scalp" you'll find a ton on it. Alcohol basically dries you from the inside out because it dehydrates you. So if this is your case, nothing you do on the outside will really help, you'd have to start internally. Good luck.

Hard water!!! That's your problem!!! It gives you horrible build up that eventually will effect your scalp! Just as hard water dries out your hair n skin it dries out your scalp! A few products that will help include the following detoxifier shampoo by aveda! Its deep clarifying n will rid your hair of build up from hard water! Use 3times per wk n leave on for 5min each use! Also scalp remedy by aveda! This is a leave in scalp treatment that relieves itching and treats scalp! Lastly scalp benifits sham n cond by aveda! This conditions scalp and stops any irritations! And as far as sleepn w conditioner? Its not doing you any gooD! Conditioner stops working after about 10to20min! I think it feels nice when you have it on because its cool in tempature and relieves the itching sensation while its on!it can't hurt you but its not helping either! If anything its suffocating your scalp and making it dry out even more! Try the aveda products I suggested! Ps do not waste money on things@sally beauty supply as far as shampoos n conditioners go! They are no better than suave! Hey products from salon only!

Thanks everyone for your responses. I will try the aveeda products. I wasn't offended by the dandruff thing by the way, I just want you to understand what I was saying. I think Style101 had the right answers. Maybe it is a build up from hard water. And yes, probably when I first put the conditioner on it feels good, so I think its helping...but when I wash my hair the next day, their is nothing different. I also, wanted to throw out something. Diabetes, can also cause this problem, I think, from what I have researched..I am waiting on a response from a Doctor on this one. I don't drink anymore, but am on several narcotics for a problem I have where I am in constant pain. So there are medications that could also be responsible, or maybe all of the above. Thanks again for all the answers. I appreciate it!!
