If it is the same stuff from when I was a child, I was never able to get it out because it was a lightener.

You spray it on and go in the sun or blow dryer? It pretty much casually bleaches your hair, then I had to grow it out.

Maybe it is different now

Sun-In is not a dye. It's made of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleach and you lightened your natural pigments. If you want your hair back at its natural color, you'll have to try to dye it that color.
