Semi-permanent color won't lighten your hair because it contains no peroxide and ammonia. Permanent color can make hair several shades lighter. To lighten the hair 1 to 2 levels, you can use a color with a 20-volume developer. However, if you want to go more than two shades lighter than your original color, you will need to do what is called a double process. A double process consists of bleaching and then putting the desired color into the hair. The hairstylist can give you a decent light brown shade, minus the unwanted red tones.

Go to Sally's Beauty Supply store and pick up at least one box of "One n' Only Color Fix". I used it to get rid of the red hair dye i put in my hair, and it worked wonderfully. Then I decided to color my hair a medium brown color which turned out to be an awful ashy gray black color, it was horrible. The next morning I went straight to Sally's to get another box and the black color came right out and now I'm back to my original dark blonde/light brown. This is how I used this product: Make sure you mix equal parts of the color reducer and conditioning catalyst and make enough to SATURATE all of your hair(i didn't add the shampoo). Put it on your hair just like you would hair dye. Put either a plastic cap or a plastic bag(which is what I did) over your hair. I used my hair dryer to make it work better. The instructions say to leave it on for 20 minutes, but I left it on for 45 minutes. This did not harm my hair in any way and it got all of the black out. Then from there you can try to dye it again, although I decided not to redye it since the color I was left with was really beautiful. I hope this helps you.
P.S. Your hair may redarken a little over the next day(this happened to me). This only means that you didn't get all of the dye out. This is not a problem. Simply redo the whole process. I had to do it twice before I got my hair to the right color(some people had to do it three or four times). Oh and do not use the processing lotion, it will make your hair black again!!!

Hope this helps you!!! Good luck!!!
