My Hair Refuses to Grow and Keeps Breaking Off
I have been trying to grow my hair out for about 2 years and it literally doesn't grow. I only trim it every 3 months if even that and it's usually less than a 1/2 an inch. It's very dry and brittle and breaks off frequently. When I wear dark colors, you can see bits of hair on my clothes around my shoulders that looks as if I have just gotten my hair trimmed. I was using a flat-iron everyday, but now try to only use it 3-4 times a week. My hair is very gross and frizzy when it's not straightened. I've tried numerous products to try and make it grow and not break off, including, hair vitamins, leave-in conditioners, shine, moisture and conditioning treatments, oil treatments, and trimming my hair. I even use the deep conditioner Redken, Butter Treat daily, but nothing seems to help. My hair is all different lengths and I don't know what to do with it. It's shoulder length and I just want it a few inches longer and all one length, but it keeps breaking. Please help so my hair will stop breaking off! Thanks.

Why are you forcing your hair to be something it's not? Certainly the flat-iron treatments aren't helping. Go to a good hair stylist and figure out a style that will work with your face and lifestyle and also be good for your hair.

I know from personal experience how much a flat iron can damage hair. I would try to find some new stylists and see if someone can help you figure out a good way to wear it. Also, ask other people with hair similar to yours where they go and who styles theirs. You could also consider hair extensions if you want some length right away.

Give your hair a break and up your iron and Vitamin D intake. If you keep bending steel eventually it will break. Give it a rest!

I have quite long hair and my ends are a little fragile but not much. I do use flat irons but not every day. I use a good heat protector along with a little coconut oil (read on a site beauty brains coconut and olive oil penetrates the cortex!) then use the flat irons. I also put coconut or olive oil on my hair at night then wash off in the morning.

I give my hair a break for 2-3 days during the week. I don't put styling products on, just a bit of coconut oil on then scrunch my hair and let it dry naturally. It leaves me with zero frizz and soft, shiny curls.

If you do decide to use the oils, don't apply on your scalp as your hair can look a little greasy. But at night I apply the oils on my scalp and massage my for 5 minutes. Then wash off in the morning.

A lot of irons get over 400 degree's which will cause your hair to become brittle and break off. Using a heat product that is to protect your hair will help. Also try using a damp towel to cool the iron a little before using it on your hair.Oils like olive and coconut are nice for the scalp and will take some frizz away but their molecular structure are to big to go into the cuticle of your hair to condition. Try using a protein based conditioner and a moisture base one and alternate them.Leave it on at least 20 minutes .Bite the bullet and get the bad stuff cut , and limit the heat there are a lot of good styling products to help with frizz.

Have you ever tried using Mane and Tail products? You can get them at Sally's Beauty Supply for cheap.
My hair is the same thing with the breakage every single day but when I started using Mane and Tail it became less and less as the days went on to almost none at all. My hair has also been significantly softer and I rarely need to use the flat iron anymore. You should check it out!

Ok, here's my tips... Get a really good clarifying shampoo... I usually use VO5... Clarify your hair... You only need to do ONE wash. Next, pat your hair dry with towel... Make sure it's DAMP. Use a protein conditioner. You need to build the strength in your hair again. I use Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship. Put on a plastic cap and let it sit for like 15-30 minutes. Rinse. Damp dry with a towel. And then to balance it, use a moisturizing leave in conditoner or your can use regular conditioner (JUST MAKE SURE IT'S MOISTURIZING! ABSOLUTELY NO PROTEIN!) Air dry. You can seal in the moisture with an oil (coconut, olive, castor, carrot, grapeseed, etc.) Once completely dry, find a cute protective style (braids, buns... ) to put your hair in. Try to keep your hair in that protective style for at least a week. Then, when you get to your wash day again, try all of the above steps again until your hair is healthy again (except the next time use a MOISTURE shampoo). Usually, you'll be able to feel the difference. I recommend washing your hair once every week and seriously cut back the heat. AA hair is all about keeping moisture/protein balance and retaining length.
