hair coloring at home disaster!

Hello. I need advice. I have dark brown hair and recently decided I wanted highlights in my hair. Well my neighbor, who is a cosmetologist, suggested we use a home kit because money was a factor. Well we did the highlights and they were to light were talking banana yellow. It was awful. So then we tried to tone it down with medium brown and now my hair is medium brown with gray where the highlights were. Help!!! What do I do to get the gray out. It is the color of lead in a pencil. It's more hideous than the banana. Please what should I do. Thanks

On dark hair, highlights should be only 2 shades lighter than your natural color. It might be a good idea to try gold or a neutral shade to tone down the yellow/gray highlights. Using a golden blonde/brown color can neutralize your highlights and make it a golden color. However, you should consider going to the salon for a color correction.
