Black hair dye
Hey everyone
I dyed my hair dark brown about 3 weeks ago and its starting to fade. They used a semi permanent type. I'm really angry because I wanted it to be very rich and I use all kinds of products to keep the color from fading!
I want to dye it black now, and I am actually considering it. I plan to do this in a month or so. I don't want it fading into brown again, so I think I will go with permanent dye.
3 questions
1. I heard there is a harmful chemical in black hair dye that is especially harmful to hair (LEAD?) is this true?
2. Are there different types of black I can dye it? OR is it one standard shade
3. Should I use permanent hair dye and touch the roots up every few weeks or so, OR should I dye it semi, and get it done fully whenever it fades
Thank you ladies for your help! :D

There is a color in a box that is the best and it last longer I can not think of the name of it but it works I use a permanent color.

If you are having it done at your salon, can't you ask your colorist or stylist for her advice/opinion? She will be the one who knows your hair type and styling product use the best, so she would likely be able to advise you on the right way to go.
I've never heard of lead being in hair dye, so I'm pretty sure you can cross that worry off your list. As far as color options, your salon should have a book of the colors they offer with hair samples for you to look at.

Do NOT dye your hair black. If you ever want to go back to your natural color, it will be a painful, ugly process. My hair was black when I was a child, but got much lighter as I got older. I decided to dye it black again, and it is horribly drying and when the roots grow out... Yikes! I'm actually trying to fade my black hair, especially because my wedding is in 6 months. Cherish the color God gave you! Or go for highlights.

Hi, I actually just answered a very similar question in an older thread. I hope I'm not violating any board rules by quoting myself to answer your question. Anyhow here goes:

There are two types of dye to be aware of: the progressively darkening type which contains (contained?) lead acetate and permanent dye. Try googling the following terms (and maybe add the words "hair dye" to get more specific results): 4-methoxy-m-phenylenediamine ; 4-chloro-m-phenylenediamine ; 2,4-toluenediamine These are ingredients in some permanent hair dyes that are reported to penetrate skin and potentially cause health problems. So it's probably as a result of this information that you've heard that black hair dye can be harmful.
As far as dying your hair black goes, I'd personally use a semi-permanent color at least initially. It still lasts for quite a while, up to a month even, but will eventually fade out unlike the permanent dye. :)
I think your hair is better off by just redying with a semi-permanent color every 4 weeks. But I love the look and feel (glossy and thick) after using semi-permanent products so maybe I am just biased. :D
Also, yes there are different levels of dark. Level 1 would be the absolute blackest. Level 2 is probably like a soft natural black/darkest brown. Level 3 is dark, dark brown. I've done my hair level 3 before and it looked straight up black. Another option to consider is to have black lowlights put in through your dark brown hair. I've had that before too and I loved it. Hth.
