I have been tasked finally... after many years... to come up with a dissertation topic. The area in which I am most interested in is knowledge management and the impact it has on organizational success. My question is this, is this area/topic too general? Is this an acceptable research title, or are there any suggestion on a topic within this area of study? If you would be so kind, please provide some feedback. I would appreciate it.

You have already been through a mirad of answers to your question however, when doing knowledge management work, consider the research that will be involved. Also, there are different types of knowledge be it Tacit or Explicit. Tacit knowledge is the one that is difficult to catalog and capture. Tacit is whay makes up your characteristics. With that, can I duplicate tacit knowledge or provide some sort of transferance process from one host to another? Example: Employee A holds a position in the company that requires a high level of expertise as well as individual character to accomplish the tasks they are responsible for. Now the question is, in order to maintain a continuity of operations within the company with the absence of employee A, is it possible to pass on the characteristics of employee A to employee B in order to maintain the same level of operability within the company? Sure explicite knowledge would help, written instructions and notes, manuals etc that employee A had in his/her possession, but what about those things that are not tangible that employee A had. So with that, impact can only be determined by what is lost from the Tacit knowledge that walks out the door, and not always the explicite knowledge. Not sure if this helped any however it is a good place to start. Good luck!
