Social Security Refund of Contributions

Asked Sep 12, 2006, 11:45 AM — 3 Answers
I am a green card holder (UK citizen) and my 40 quarters of working will be completed shortly. However, I might have to return to the UK next year for family reasons - I understand that I can get a lump sum refund of my contributions if I leave the USA permanently. Is this true? If it is, are federal and state taxes deducted from this?

Thanks.

I believe you'd have to contact your state regarding state income taxes, and the IRS and possibly the SSA regarding federal taxes/refunds in your situation.

I would recommend contacting the IRS (irs.gov) because although you might leave the US forever or so you think- you might want to come back. You can call the IRS and ask questions for free.
