Enlisting in British Army in Jamacia

I have some papers concerning an ancestor. He enlisted in the British Army in Kingstown Jamacia on 11th August 1837 aged 14 7/12 years. My question is how did someone aged 14 7/12 years get to Jamacia so young. Would there be any passenger ship records or is he likely to have been a stowaway? Any help would be great.
