Upside down Tomatoes

Curiosity getting the better of me, I decided to try growing an upside down tomato plant, and being frugal, I made a planter out of a five gallon bucket It isn't as fancy, but why spend $20 if you have the parts?.

It has been outside for two weeks now, and is getting stronger, but there is one thing that I noticed; The main stem/stalk/trunk of the plant has started growing up, and I am assuming that after it sets fruit and they begin to grow, the stalk will grow downwards.

Which leads me to this thought/questions:
If the stalk is growing up, even though it is facing down, are the roots growing down, even though they are facing up??? Sounds almost like a paradox.

Would this add stress to the plant?

I also decided to put it up on an old pool deck, so if it starts to really grow I'll have enough support to just drape, and tie it around the deck.

As an ongoing project I'll update on an irregular schedule, maybe every two weeks.

I believe you can only put 4 per post though.
You might be right, all I saw in FAQ was "It depends"

All have toms though.
Three main reasons for leaf curl....
*environmental stress...We know they've been under stress, The hot weather.
*herbicide damage........We know You try to be as organic as possible What'a 'bout your neighbors herbicide use
-for lawn care?

*viral infection............. We don't know if you've checked for virus's or fungi, or bugs.

For tomato mosaic virus, symptoms of this virus include Curl, mottled leaves and smaller than normal leaflets.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus is transmitted by sap-sucking insects and causes leaf roll symptoms in infected tomato plants. Purplish veins on the leaf underside will help to distinguish this virus from environmental leaf roll and herbicide injury. Once it gets this though, the plant is usually a goner.

If you don't see bugs like aphids or otherwise damaged leaves, they should be okay.
For the environment check the weather forcast's.
One thing that is impossible to control is herbicide drift from your neighbors.

When in doubt, move 'em out!

News from the Bucket, June 13th, 2009:

Rain is again the top story here at the bucket, although not as persistent as it had been in past weeks.

Taken from NWS Local Forcast:
PARTLY SUNNY ACROSS THE REGION WITH ISOLATED SHOWERS...INCREASING IN AREAL COVERAGE DURING THE MID TO LATE AFTERNOON HOURS WITH SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING. SOME OF THE THUNDERSTORMS COULD BECOME STRONG...PRODUCING SMALL HAIL...BRIEF GUSTY WINDS AND FREQUENT LIGHTNING. TEMPERATURES IN THE MID TO UPPER 70S AT 1215 PM WILL WARM INTO THE UPPER 70S TO LOWER 80S AT 3 PM.

Its 80.3°F at 1:1:28pm edt
Rain this week ending 061209; 2.13 ~~~ NWS 1.85

BB's doing well, considering the lack of direct sunlight. He's 38” vertical, and 34 horizontal, sent along three pix, two of them are back when, and now shots for comparison. The main stem is the longest, and I started to train the one on the right to go to the right, there is one on the left, but it's smaller, and towards the back.

He's getting a lot of fruit stems, but Still no fruit! . The first stem to get flowers has its blossoms 'bout ready to fall off, and I don't wanna resort to strong chemicals. Except for the yard dirt and an initial dose of MG, I've left it on its own. Anyone's welcome to chime in, if I come up with something I'll let ya know.

Wait....back when I first hung it the temps where mid 50's or above, then we had that cold spell where it got down in the 30's hmmm, I wonder.......?

Well I gotta get goin' chores ya know..... I have a new project this week, replacing an old basement window an puttin' in glass block, with a covered well on the outside.

See Ya 'round the compost pile!

!.!.!.!.!!.!.!.!.!NEWS FLASH!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!NEWS FLASH!.!.!.!.!!.!.!.!.!

To all the gardening gurus across the world BB is a father or mother or hybrid, well, I'm not going to get into semantics

Was out in the yard today lookin him over, when I spied the new arrivals hiding in the back. I kept looking at the first fruit stem, and here they snuck up on me! Their at least penny, close to nickle size.

They could of been there for a week, who knows? I still don't think I'll have toms by the 4th. I'm thinking more like the end of July, even the peepers (frogs) are runnin late this year.

See Ya 'round the compost pile!

WOW, BB looks great and big!

I just got back from Southern Illinois and haven't had time to check on mine yet, BUT I was walking the blocks down there and a couple people had UDTP and they were teeny tiny, so I felt better about mine.

Now have seen yours and the feeling has changed
Maybe I'll be surprised when I get home this afternoon.

The pics looked great!

KUXJ agrees: You can affect an effect but you shouldn't effect an affect - that's acting See below. ↓

yours seem to be doing decent dahlia... sometimes nature is just hateful and causes problems when it wants to lol.. you've got some small ones growingh on your plant dont you... there also could be quite the geographic difference between you and them and a temp difference etc so that could be why yours are not growing nor acting the same?

Well KUXJ is from Cen. Pa and I'm from Sacramento, so there is a big difference in weather, but wither way he knows what he's doing.

I'm originally from Chicago, where you could practically throw some seeds on the ground and get great tomatoes. I never boned up on it.

It's been ten days, so I think I'll post another pic, I still only have one tomato and it's small. I'm not discouraged, because I have 9 other plants.

I measured and UDT is only 26" and sticking straight out. Only one shoot, just one, nothing coming off the sides yet and when it starts going down (if it doesn't die first) it will be dragging on the ground. I don't have anything higher with sun to hang it from.

The second picture is of a plant 3 doors down from UDT, it has tomatoes, but something is happening with it. I'm going to MG it again with all the others since it has been 10 days.

I've got everything labeled except for the UDT, so I'll check when I get home and report. I have 2 of each, so I'll be able to see if both have the leaf curl.
