Upside down Tomatoes

Curiosity getting the better of me, I decided to try growing an upside down tomato plant, and being frugal, I made a planter out of a five gallon bucket It isn't as fancy, but why spend $20 if you have the parts?.

It has been outside for two weeks now, and is getting stronger, but there is one thing that I noticed; The main stem/stalk/trunk of the plant has started growing up, and I am assuming that after it sets fruit and they begin to grow, the stalk will grow downwards.

Which leads me to this thought/questions:
If the stalk is growing up, even though it is facing down, are the roots growing down, even though they are facing up??? Sounds almost like a paradox.

Would this add stress to the plant?

I also decided to put it up on an old pool deck, so if it starts to really grow I'll have enough support to just drape, and tie it around the deck.

As an ongoing project I'll update on an irregular schedule, maybe every two weeks.

Subject is a "Better Boy" started 042809........KUXJ

Toms, also emit ethylene when they ripen, If you were to wrap your toms with that newsprint,
you'll find they will ripen faster.

Unless you want to try jmjoseph's recipe,
  • wrap any greenies left at the end of the season in newsprint.
  • Place them in something like a milk crate
  • Start with a section of newsprint
  • Then a layer of wrapped toms
  • section of newsprint
  • layer of toms
  • till you reach the top
  • Then cover with a section
  • store them in a cool to warm dark place
  • and check'em 'bout once a week.
Depending on how many you start with, you could have fresh toms past Christmas. That's what GrandMa did.

Ethylene is also like a hormone to a plant, and it uses it to give them a preservativeness... (Eddie, get the dictionary)..that helps the fruit to stay fresher longer.

(Newsprint = Newspaper. That's what its called in the Industry....Not until it leaves the Newspaper Production Facility is it called "Newspaper" I worked for the local paper for 32years, and old habits are hard to break.)

btw.......I got my "snake" out, see pix.

Thank You!, I'm not sure 'bout JD though.

I was gonna wait till Fridays NFTB, but here's a sneak preview, see pix.

If by "the one I'm working on" means, "To root or not to root" BB's cutting.
It's still lookin' healthy, but no rooting so far.
I'm still figuring another four days before I see any.

I'll run a pix Friday

NICE! and yes you are forgiven, even though I looked like a fool with my face right up against the screen with glasses on looking for Mickey.
