Shallow Well System: Problem/Winterization

Hi,

I bought a home last summer that has a shallow well system. Unfortunately, I did not do much research on what was needed to be done for winterization. This spring I tried to fire up the pump/well and no water comes out - however, it sounds like pump is still pumping. I don't know what all of the parts are called, but there is some sort of a cast iron housing between the tank and the pipe/point coming out of the well. This appears to have a crack in it. Additionally, it appears that there is at least one spot where someone (prior owner) has repaired (welded) a some previous cracking.

My assumption (you know what happens when you assume). Is that I didn't do some winterizing step and some of the plumbing cracked, and now it can't get suction to pump???

Anyway, looking for suggestions on troubleshooting/fixing and what should be done each fall. I'd like fix the system I have (to save$), but it appears a new system is < $300 - so I don't want to invest too much in time/parts/labor bills on this old system.

Hi,
Do you have any friends, like neighbors, you could ask about this?
Or, maybe a plumber friend?
I do know that when the casing is cracked, there will be no suction. We had a shallow well pump at one time, that did the same. We also had to pour water through the top, filling up the pipe, before it would pump; called "priming". But, if the casing is cracked, it won't work.
We had to replace the part above ground.
