leveling your garden

hi i am going to be digging up my lawn and leveling my garden ready for paving can anybody give me some tips on doing this, cheaply and easily if possible

How big is the area you are leveling?
For a smaller area, say 10' x 10', a four to six foot level on the side of a straight 2 x 4 should work fine. For a larger area, I would suggest using a transit and tape measure.
