Well, it definitely looks very old. Do you know the country of origin? Being that the chamber on the left has a covering that is grated, it would seem that whatever would be stored in there would need to have air circulating for some reason.

Check the antique/collectible furniture price guides at the public library. There are often photos. This looks like a desk of some sort, maybe French? I don't know if the grated box is decorative or is supposed to house a pet lion cub. If I find more information, I'll post it.

Thank You for getting back to me. No unfortunately I do not know the country of origin. My guess is a server of some sort. The piece is not actually mine I build and repair furniture and this customer contacted me with this question. I will know more when It arrives here at the shop.

Thank You for getting back to me. I'll ceck that out at the library. My guess is a server of some sort although the lion cub idea is pretty funny.
