Staining unfinished furniture to a deep cherry color

I purchased cherry stain but it is too light. How do I get the deep red color of cherry on unfinished whitewood?

Hi, pattyg2!

If you go to a Sherwin-Williams paint store, they will have lacquer-based stains that will help you to achieve the color that you want.

They also can make a special tint using those same stains for what you want.

Look in the mahogany family of stains. The name that stain manufactures use has only a little connection to the real color of wood. Just sounds good. Minwax's Red Mahogany is about as close to the color of cherry as I have found. Maybe a mix of red and medium mahogany to get the color you want. At least its close to what you expect to see when someone says that it has a "cherry finish". Nothing matches the beauty of a nice piece of cherry that has been exposed to the light for six months.

Thanks Harold. I have red mahogany stain already and I will try it on the underside of the piece. Wish I could have gotten the pieces of furniture I wanted already finished but couldn't find them for the price I was willing to pay so I ended up buying unfinished.

As usual you were right Harold! I thank you so much for the info and here are the pics of how the project turned out. I was trying to match the cherry bed and the tables match exactly!
