Questions thru the PM

I'm starting to get people sending me homework problems through the PM instead of posting them where they belong.

The only reason it bugs me is cause I'm not the only one here and I do things as I have time to do them, just like everyone else. I don't mind follow-ups to the PM.

Is this normal for this to happen? And if so, anything to be done about it?

Yes, it's normal that some people ignore how the site is supposed to work.

Some options:
1. Just ignore them.
2. Reply "Please post this question to the appropriate board".
3. Add a line to your signature "Please do not PM me with questions, instead ask on the appropriate board".

As for me, I just ignore them

I will respond with a 'please post questions or followups on the public board' message. Unfortunately, it is all too common for people to think they deserve direct attention from a volunteer. The ones who ask followups aren't so bad, most of the time its because they couldn't figure out how to add a reply. The Answer This Question link is misleading (should say Respond to this Note). But the ones who just presume to ask you directly are unfathomable. I ignore any e-mail posts and will tell PM writers to post to the boards. If someone sends something to my business e-mail, I'll respond asking if they want a quote for providing the solution.

Hi Morgaine,

The Scott and Rick gave you great advice. I just wanted to let you know how wonderful and kind it is that you do give your time when you do.

Don't feel bad about it at all and I completely do understand your frustration.

Getting questions through PM's is a big pain but it's difficult for me to ignore a plumbing emergency so I copy and paste PM's up on the page for other experts to see and answer. I've put up a sticky requesting no E-Mail or PM questions but it doesn't do much good because I'm still getting them. Oh well!!!

Allheart agrees: I've seen that done as well. Very good idea

I will do what Tom does on occassion where I feel the need urgent enough to not wait until they resubmit.

I forget I even asked this. LOL. Thanks for all the replies, and the usual amusement.

I guess the concensus is: deal with it. :-)

And speedball, I'm not surprised the sticky doesn't help. People really don't read or paid attention to stuff like that. We have a big (bright red, thanks to Rick) notice at the top of homework help telling people the rules about submitting homework, and SOOO many people ignore it. How you ignore RED I have no idea, but there it is. Its one advantage is that now I'm just linking to it. In fact, I sit here with an extra browser open so I can just link to different stuff on the site.
