how do i reply when a user answers back?

I don't understand if I'm suppose to use the "quote" button or if I am suppose to submit an answer of my own. For example I posted a question and someone answered but also asked me a question for deeper insight on the situation. how do I reply so they are notified and can reply back..

geez im not making any sense.

If you are responding directly after a person then there is no real need to quote.
Quote is best used if answering an earlier point and the narrative would be lost in the response.

I just want to add, that I rarely use the quote function. When I use it, it is because the thread may have gone onto another page and quoting makes it easier to follow the thread. But, that's kind of along the same thing that Curlyben is talking about.

I also use the quote function if I feel that someone might be likely to change there original question or response after I have responded to them. People will frequently change what they have originally posted here, depending on the situation and topic area where questions and answers are posted.

I think it tis confusing for a new user. You could have Answer, Answer with quote and Rate this Answer and put only Ask about... on a separate line.
(Post quick Answer) would stay the same.

If the question is the the logged in user's, you could change the buttons to:
Reply, Reply with quote and Rate this Answer and put Ask about... on a separate line.

Post Quick Answer would change to Post quick reply for the logged in user.

Just a thought.

Changing some things for those who are new and not yet familiar with how to use the site might be a good move...

You are making perfect sense. I'm using the quote (but editing out extraneous stuff) because I wanted to respond to this specific point. Anytime a reply is posted to a thread you are subscribed to, you will get an e-mail notification. Sometimes, if several replies are posted in a short space of time, you may only get one notification.

Still a little confused. okay so ScottGem asked that I post a response to let every one know if My question was answered. I just posted a "quick answer" because i understand now, why and when the "quote" comes into play. But will any of You be notified or emailed that i have responded?

I would have thought there would be a "reply" option that would be directly replied to ScottGem so it would be Known to SG that i did respond back.

As an Aside, under "question tools", one can select to unsubscribe to questions or subscribe to threads that you might be interested in the responses.

By default everyone who provides an answer and the original poster (OP) gets emailed the notification.
