The Great Marmite/Vegemite Debate

OK following on from the Weird food combo thread, I would like to find out about everyones views on the great Marmite/Vegemite debate.
On the whole people tend to be seperated into love or loathe with nothing inbetween.
So time for a poll.

If any Americans could let me know what their equivalent is that would be great.

Salty, meaty, excellent in a cheese or cucumber sandwich, or when spread thinly on buttered toast.

In a pinch, it can be used in place of beef broth to make a vegan meal.

My only regret is that I can't get it in the 1lb jars in this country.

I don't think anyone really knows for sure. We may have to send a sample to the lab. Get me some rubber gloves, a scapel, and a cracker.

It's a yeast extract. Black like tar. Salty as anything. If you've ever had bovril, kind of like that. Tastes like licking an oxo cube.

magprob agrees: I'm sorry folks but that sounds just flat gross! You could scrape up something much better off a slaughter house floor!

Hey, Magpie, send me some and I will put it on a petrie plate in the lab and see what bacteria grows on it.

He** I still have no freaking idea what it is, other than gross.

Philistines. I'm guessing that you'd turn down a nice roquefort as well. Americans and their weak taste buds.

When I get hold of a nice chunk of sheep's milk Roquefort you best not even try reachin for some or you might pull back a stump! But I do have a little creme and sugar with just a squeeze of lemon in my hot tea.
