Mozilla Thunderbird

Anybody can help me on Thunderbird? I installed it in my PC with XP. Everything was
OK until the prg asked me to enter my password. I had not been asked a password before that. So, I typed in one. But the prg kept on rejecting me so I cannot use it.
(Now I have an account name but cannot use the email service.)

Tried many times but to no prevail. What went wrong? How to solve the problem?
Thanks.

I had given several passwords to it. I vividly remember I was not asked to provide
a password before that. So, the first password should be acceptable.
