What Can We do to Get the Word out About Ask Me Help Desk?
I have heard many experts here lament that members of the original AskMe.com have not migrated to this forum yet. How can we best alert them (and others) of the existence of this site?
I would love to have some of the good people that were on the dog board in the early days of AskMe here to help me, Calli, UHOF, Neufsrus, elitegundogs, and others I just don't remember their names. Most of the good people were run off by the trolls. I think many of the users left over the bickering too. It was worse than the Fred/Scott stuff here in computers. Most of them I no longer have any contact with. Just as I seldom direct people here to other forums, I avoid using other forums to direct others here. I guess using email and private messages would avoid alerting some of the trolls that don't seem to have found their way here.
We could use more good people in several of the areas I look at. There are too many questions where my weak answer is the best people get. I guess maybe advertise. A number of people do seem to find their way in from search engines.
I have a printing program that creates a virtual printer for PDF documents, and saves it to disk. I also own Adobe Acrobat Professional which I use frequently as I used to create guides, Standard Operating Procedures and Memorandums for the hospital I worked at. So, what I do is when there is a real interesting thread here, I print it and pass it on to friends to read and see if they are interested in joining. I've received a few positive replies so far and they will be joinging up soon. I plan from now on to include the url in my emails and inform them to check out this forum too. Most of my contacts are from Germany, employed here as civilians or in the military, and are doctors, nurses, and even airplane mechanics, so it will be a variety. Some are also bi-lingual and probably be of help to new people in the States who speak a european language from German to Italian. I also joined Wondir, thru an advertisement from here, and I can include the url to my messages there, and most of the members and guests are from the UK. But I will be selective on that forum as there are some real crazies who just want people to do their homework for them and are seldom appreciative of our help. I hope this is of help. I plan on learning how to do my own homepage soon, with help from you all of course, and will include the url there also. So I certainly will try to do my part. Any other suggestions?
Hi,
I seriously doubt that anyone left over any "bickering" by anyone. Some of the more serious and ridiculous answers in different categories have had their ID's banned. Why not just move on with the best answers anyone can give??
There is no way of knowing how many from AskMe are still around, still answering questions, etc. This site does have some very good people answering questions, with more added every now and again. The new people are quite good, with good advice and suggestions.
Things change, and the "old experts" have to be replaced, sooner or later, by newer people and newer ideas. I have also noticed that the questions themselves, are coming from people who use search engines, trying to find their own answers first. They also list what they have tried, (especially in the Computing Category), what worked, and what didn't work. Most answers here are also available at other sites, same answers, or similar.
Question/Answer sites willl never be what they use to be, simply because there are some many other sites (thru search sites) available now; with answers already given. Many questions are the type where the asker simply wants reassurance, or possibly which direction is the best to go.
Best wishes,
fredg
I know a site with a lot of old AskMe experts on it that doesn't get much action. Would it be Kosher for me to go over and invite them to check us out? Tom aka speedball1
Hi, Speedball,
I see nothing wrong in asking anyone from any site to join another site. There are those, however, who will accuse you of trying to "drive off" membership; but, such is life. Not everyone has the same opinions, and it would be a very dull place if they did. Advertising has it's advantages.
Best wishes,
fredg
hi. i have told alll my friends about this great site, and they all have usernames now...it is a great way to find answers for anything and has helped me quiute a bit over the past few weeks.....
ps. how do u gain a better ranking on this site, eg. ultra expert, senior expert, etc...?
have a question, I think Nez and I posted yesterday, but don't see them. Were they maybe not appropriate, or did you choose to 'cut' them out, if so, please let me know, as I don't want to do anything wrong. Thanks.
