OK, I've got a suggestion. An option to view new posts for a specific topic would be nice. If I click on the "New Posts" link I get all recent posts forum wide. It would be nice if I could just see the new posts in a topic I am interested in.

If there's a feature like this and I'm simply missing it - let me know

Actually there is a way, albeit not a direct way:

1. Click the Category you want to check out from the main menu.
2. Click Search this Forum > Advanced search.
3. Use the "Find Posts From" option to chose since "your last visit" or "yesterday", etc.

Without a term to search on, it didn't work for me.

Very interesting. I did not try it that way, as I do something similar on a daily basis.

If you go to the Advanced Search from any window:

1. Do not enter a search term.
2. Designate search for posts with "At most zero responses"
3. Designate the "find posts from" period or leave it at the default "any date".

...it works that way.

I wonder why it wouldn't work searching it from the category?

This is good, but I see one problem with it. That is what constitutes New.

There are several possibilities:

1) threads started since last connect
2) threads not read
3) threads with new activity since last connect

I think 1) would be the best, using 3) brings the issue of revivied threads.

But this inspires another idea that might help. Is it possible for posts to be categorized as either a question or an answer? By doing that, someone looking for questions to answer can be shown new questions. You could have it default to question for newbies and answers for those with Rep Power (a good use of Rep Power).

Maybe I am missing something, but it seems fairly easy to click on a forum and and have all the posts to it come up, most recent first. You should be able to set a bookmark or favorite for it. You can just work your way down it until you come to old material. I just clicked on Heating and cooling. There were 2 new posts in bold, and then the older ones.

I pick my way through all the new posts even though I would much rather skip many of them. As the site grows, it is becoming a bigger pain, and I am afraid I miss some things where I might be able to help. If I just want to my usual areas, I would have missed this.

rickj,
It works for at most 0 replies, but not at least 0 replies.

labman,
You are completely correct. I don't know why that didn't enter my mind. Hmmm...

LTheobald,
Doesn't what labman said work for you?

I like the old way - seeing all new posts.

New Posts

Hi,
I, also, like the old way of seeing all new posts. They start with "today" and "Yesterday", which is a good way, without adding more stuff to pick from categories on a drop down menu. One can already do this by picking the Category beforehand from the Home page.
