Using the Rep system

The following was posted recently in another thread (http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/editpos...itpost&p=54671). I though it more appropriate to open the discussion here.

Who are these "many members"? I've never seen any discussion of this before. In the discussions about the Rep system, the consensus was to use it and see how it goes. So all Ben is doing is using it as it was designed to be used.

In my opinion, using the approval/disapproval rating is important. Maybe an asker is reviewing the answer, it looks good so they try it without reading further down the thread. However, if they see a comment added to the answers that says its not the best answer, they will then read further. This is the value of the rating system.

As Scott has already said, as the Rep's are for approve or disapprove I had to mark in the negative AND post a follow up as to why this post was disapproved of.
Personnally I think that this is exactly what the Rep system is designed for, so a nother user with a similar problem can see from the posts which ones are the best to try and which to avoid.

Another site I use has a similar system, where by the answer is accepted as being the one that worked.
All others get a mention, but if you are suffering from a similar problem, you know what is worth trying.

Unfortunatly with computers there are so many black and white answers where the agree/disagree system works fine, but in other areas this may not be the case.
If an answer is totally wrong then a disagree is warrented and a reply does need to be posted correct the inaccuracity.

Hope all this makes sense.

The big problem is that as soon as you wound some peoples ego with a disapproval, they immediately go and disapprove one of your posts regardless of merit. The system stinks, and the sooner it is junked, the better.

Lab, stop being so pessimistic. The spread feature seems to be preventing that to a large extent at least in the forums I frequent. If someone is rating answers out of spite they should be reported. I had one obvious spite rating removed and the rater was warned about it.

i myself beleive in the rep system, not of "points" , just like a report on how good the answer was, or how bad it was, to better yourself, spitefull people should be reported in some way. though the spread feature does keep it in check somewhat.

ScottGem : I agree, though the spread feature can be very much of an annoyance.
