Using the Comments Feature - Official Guidelines

I like the Comments feature very much. I propose the following guidelines for using the Comments feature.

Positive comments should be given under the following circumstances:
1) From the asker as a thank you
2) From other members to ratify the factual correctness of an answer
3) From other members to agree with the opinions expressed

Negative comments should be given under the following circumstances:
1) From another member when an answer is FACTUALLY wrong
2) From the asker if the advice turned out to be wrong

Negative comments should NOT be given when:
1) there is a difference of opinion not of fact
2) when a response has been added to the thread disagreeing with the opinion

These are the guidelines I follow when I use the comments feature. Opinions anyone?

Scott<>

Note: The operators of this site have agreed with and approved the guidelines so they are now official.

I agree with you Scott. I think this is a healthy perspective on the comment field.

I usually give positive comments when:

1) agree with the opinion expressed.
2) don't agree with the opinion expressed and want to say so but feel it is their opinion and they have a right to it.

There may be other reasons but htey are the main ones.

I usually give negative comments when: (I don't remember if I ever gave one)

1) the person is totally off the subject and/or insulting another poster
2) the advice given was bad advice

I think negative comments should definitely be used sparingly. If a more qualified person in the field thought the advice given would damage a product or hurt the person asking, negative comment should be given and a post by that person.

Back to positive comments. An example would be that I saw in the tax section Atlanta Tax Expert would give a post to confirm what another had said to be correct. He could have put that in a comment but chose to add a post. I would be leary to take tax advice from anyone else but if ATE tends to agree with the same person, that gives credibility to the other person in that particular field.

Yeah I agree that ATE should use the Comments feature more instead of just adding a post.

But I'm really bugged by people giving negative comments for differences of opinion. An example can be found in this thread:

See my post #15 (on page 2).

I agree. This was a debate on opinions. Here if I disagreed with your post and wanted to put in a comment I would have still agreed but put my comment there or just added a post.

I don't think we totally understand what the comments is there for.

HI,
I agree with the "negative" comments issues.
Many are given for matters of opinion; as they have in the past, and are still.
A matter of opinion should not be judged with a "disapproval" comment. They should be addressed appropriately in a follow-up post.

"Negative comments should be given under the following circumstances:
1) From another member when an answer is FACTUALLY wrong
2) From the asker if the advice turned out to be wrong"

I have advocated the above quote, when to give Negative comments, for quite some time. The answer is either "flat out" wrong Factually, or the Asker tried the advice and it turned out to be wrong.
Too many times, Negative comments have been given by another "expert", not even knowing if the advice given is worthwhile or not. That is why I am opposed to other 'experts' being able to give comments about an answer, UNLESS it is Factually Wrong!

I agree too. I only use a negative comment when someone says something hateful or disparaging, or gives very bad advice. I don't use it for differences of opinion or in "subjective" threads. To me that's just rude and nasty, and shows a lack of tolerance for other people's beliefs.

Comments on this post
ScottGem : I like that; "subjective threads". I also agree, its just being nasty because the person didn't agree with you.

when i have a different opinon, i'd rather make an entry where i explain the way i see thing and what are my objections concerning the other opinion
i find this way not only more polite, but also a constructive way of discussing different ways of viewing an issue

I suppose I am guilty of this I guess I didn't understand the comments feature. I do feel that this website is about opinions, that is what it is made up of, and I am not here to make anyone else feel badly about theirs, even if it is different than my own. I think that thread you gave an example of where people (like myself) are doing this is a good example. I guess that is just such a sensitive subject for everyone and sometimes emotions get the best of us. For that I do apologise. I do agree, you should only give negative comments if the person's facts are wrong, not if it is just your opinion that they're wrong. Then you can put that in an answer, not a comment. Thanks for clarification, everyone.

Excellent summary of good suggestions - and an excellent opener to discuss what each of you think are good ways and bad ways to use Comments...but can we leave questioning each a users motives or practices to PMs?

BRAVO!! I agree 100%. I recently felt bombarded by several "negative" comments.
I just wrote in and asked a simple question to this site, and then I felt "blasted" - it should not have gone to the extreme that it did, with "comments" ...... I will not let this happen again, and not fall into myself even "commenting" ............I will just say "thank you" and that's it!!'' Thank you Scott ......... reading the above reminds me to not get caught up!!
