can't comment on posts

I have a question. Why is it when you go to comment on a post a window comes up saying that "you must spread reputation around before giving it to -so and so" Does that mean spread my rep? or someone elses? This happens sometimes but other times Im able to comment. Hope this isn't a stupid sounding question, but im confused. Help.

Not a stupud question at all since we all asked it at some point. The system is set up so that you can't repeatly add comments to the same person several times in a row. This is a security mechanism to avoid misuse of the rep system. I believe you need to spread comments to 5 other people before you can add another comment to that first person.

Not sure it that's clear but i'm sure others will respond here.

It means you have given that one person alone too much rep and you need to comment on other peoples posts before you can comment on their again. It's nothing to do with your rep.

Hope that makes sense

That is it. Unfortunately there is nothing to keep those lacking knowledge from approving poor posts. I see a lot of that in areas where I know what I am talking about.

Just to clarify since there was a contradiction between Need's and DJ's answers. Its not an issue of giving one person too much rep since the system doesn't totally allow that. Once you give rep to one person you have to post comments on at least 5 other people (not posts but people) before you can comment on that person again.
