Reputation Being Manipulated

I think it's interesting to watch many people "tooting their own horn"... I mean I see some people with high reps with hardly any posts, or just hate posts.
Here's a prime example:
This member has 1 post asking a question joined Dec.3rd, and already has a REP of 2????

Anyone knows?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone knows a cream... Well... Can anyone help me? ...I'll be grateful if someone help me.
Thanks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

See what I mean?
It gives rep little validity in the future!!

well yeah i see what you mean. i havent been hear all that long and there are people here who give much better advice than i do because they have more understanding of things. i think it is too soon that im ultra expert. i dnt feel "ultra expert" shouldnt i be here at least a year or two?

I never saw an announcement, but it looks to me like people now start with a rep power of 2. Frankly the sooner the whole rep system is dumped, the better.

Labman, I think you're right because I saw another new id that had a rep of 2. And I thought ??? That is annoying...what is the point then???

***Well I took out the member's id name in the original post, since it looks like all newbies get a rep power of 2.

Labman is almost correct.
Newbies now start with a RP of 1 when they sign up.
As soon as they have made their first post it increases to 2.
Seems unfair, but it was found that if a user with a RP of 0 (eg a newbie) rates an answer then that rating response doesn't appear on the rated answer.

Hope this makes sense.

Problem is longer term user now see newbies with a hisghr RP than them and its annoying.

At the end of the day RP is meaningless, what really counts is the post count and number of green squares.
The Grenn squares are a direct symbol of how good the answers are as it's determined from your peers.

rep

well you also have to realize not everyone wants to hear the truth.

even if they ask for it.

so they won't give you a high rep, just because they don't like the correct answer that you gave them.

it is all so subjective anyway.

Comments on this post
Skinwhite : I agree completely!
labman : I see an extremely poor correlation between the quality of answers and rating of the expert.

I agree with you completely aewoodall!! I've been around forums long enough to know that the right/logical/true answer may not be the most popular answer! And those people with blunt personalities end up being right a lot, but rub people the wrong way the way they say it.
