Points.

I don't understand what drives the points. I see one thing: Giving feedback lowers my points significantly. I gave feedback on 6-7 posts this morning and my points went down by 20.

Is that the way it's meant to be?

I guess the real question is "what is a point?"

Points

Hi,
I, also, would be interested in knowing "What is a Point?" also. Can anyone tell us how that is calculated?
I also see that this morning, Friday, 11-04-05, any ratings are now posted in public, with the post that was rated, with the comments.

Frankly I would NOT like to see the formulas behind the points explained. In my opinion that would lead to people ballot stuffing. Doing things that will earn them more points

I don't think we should care how many points we get (I certainly don't). If you are consistent in the quality of your answers, then the points will come.

The key is the rating for individual answers, that's important. Having a ranking system is OK, but its of much lesser importance. And there should be constraints on the ability to manipulate any such system. That includes publishing the criteria for it.

Again, Scott good points. If not individual questions, then specific forums. A few people like you and Tom mainly stick to one area you know well. OK, I don't even know enough about Windows to be sure you do. On the other hand, many other people are posting in several forums including me. In general I have a very solid background in dogs. Well, don't ask me about AKC breed standards, and most of the medical stuff, I refer people to their vet. Best answer in most cases anyhow. I least I know better than to blithely suggest mineral oil for a constipated dog before a vet checks it for an obstructed bowel. There are some other areas I know a lot less about, but have been successful answering questions or guiding people into figuring out the problem their self. If anybody was giving better answers in those areas, I would largely abandon them as I have plumbing.

So somebody builds up points in one area and then is to be taken as giving reliable advice in areas they know little about? I at least qualify my answers when outside the areas I know best. The rep system here as it exists now, is the biggest farce I have seen on the net. Ain't never going to make a silk purse out that sow's ear.

I agree with you. Showing "how to earn a point" is not the way to go...but I can't help but wonder why my points would go DOWN as a result of my giving feedback to/about others' posts.

Good points. I hadn't even considered that possibility. Because people don't register as "experts" here, its enitrely possible one can build up a rep in one forum, then travel to another and give a truly bad answer.

Oh come on, You don't think Pointask's is worse? Anonymous ratings, no comments, People creating IDs just to rate people out of spite?? The Rep points system here is nirvana by comparison. However, I do agree its not the greatest, on the other hand, I think the ability to rate specific posts may turn out to be the best of any Q&A site.

If its possible to explain the system without giving clues as to how to manipulate it, it would be nice to know. But my feeling is that we need to err on the side of caution. There clearly are people who would try to manipulate the system if they knew how.

The only thing that drives points is other members rating your posts. I believe your decrease in points was a coincidental anomaly. Giving feedback does not lower either Rep Points or Rep Power.

An accumulation of ratings by other members who have Rep Power.

I see.
We'll call it coincidental anomaly, then

If I remember previous discussions, points are based on active ratings? And only the last 25 ratings are kept?

If that's so, then what probably happened to Rick is a bunch of high ratings dropped off as a bunch of lower ratings came on, thereby lowering the total.

Does that make sense?
