Idea - forum display
Some sort of font change or color change in the "last post" column, which would identify the last post is the original poster. e.g. make the original poster's name be bold in the last post column

You make the change in font/type only when the last poster is the original poster.

Meaning you don't have to spend the time comparing. It also might be nicer if the forum would say something like "The original poster, XYZ replied to ..." and "ABC replied to ..." in emailed announcements. Again, depending on the original poster.
