What rights do I have as a father to an unborn child?
I was recently dating a woman for a very short period and she became pregnant very quickly and I have no doubt at all that this is my child. Since we found out about our unborn child, we have decided to go our separate ways and try, for the sake of our child to be civil. Over the last couple of weeks our friendship has seriously detriorated and now it is her wish that I have nothing to do with our child. This is not what I want, I want to be a father, this will be my first child and her second. She keeps playing with my emotions, changing her mind from one extreme to the next and I don't know where I stand anymore or what to do to ensure I am able to be a part of my child's life. Most of our recent communications have only been over text, she refuses to speak with me on the phone, or let me go round to her home. I have saved all of the text messages, from myself to her and vice versa. We did attend the first scan together, but all of this has been raised since. She allowed me to keep the scan picture, of which she has now demanded back and as of now I am no longer allowed to be a part of or experience this pregnancy with her. What can I do? What are my legal rights as a father to an unborn child? And what are my rights as a father when our child is born? Can she do this to me? I have done nothing wrong and have tried to be as supportive as I can, but I am worn down, I feel there is never going to be any friendship anymore, to be honest,if this is the way she is going to continue, I just want to be a part of my child's life.

You have no rights to an unborn child. ALL of the rights are with the mother during pregnancy. However, there ARE some things you can do.

    1. Check to see if your state has a putative father registry. If it does, have yourself listed on it.

    2. Get a lawyer.

    3. File for custody and/or visitation once the child is born.

    1. you have as noted, no rights at all till the child is born.

    2. once born, you can file for visitation, or even joint custody

    3. don't trust anything verbal or even emails the only thing that can be enforced is the court order signed by the judge.
