Depends on the court case. Generally you don't file for a paternity test. You file for custody and the paternity test is done as part of the custody filing.

If you are awarded primary physical custody then you won't have to pay support. But if you aren't awarded such custody, then the mother will probably ask for support.

I would think its obvious what a paternity test is for. While its generally obvious who the mother is, if the mother is not married there will be a question as to who the father is. A paternity test establishes a genetic connection between the child and the father,

If the other parent is asking for a paternity test though the court and the court orders it, you have to take it. Or be in contempt of court.

If you are the father and want visitation or part custody of the child, then you file for it and then ask for a DNA test to prove you are the parent.

If the other parent files for child support then then you will have to pay it.
