Newspaper ad to show not responsible for bills

My son and his lady have separated. They had a joint account at a Credit Union which they used to buy a couch.
When they separated, she stated she would keep the couch
and simply make those payments. She did not and now
the Credit Union wants my son to make the payments. I
have heard one can place an ad in the newspaper stating
they are no longer responsible for debys incurred by (name)
after a specified date. He is screwed in THIS situation but
would like to protect himself from other things she may
try to stick him with. He is a full time college student so
does not have the resources to make this payment. If
he DOES have to make these payments, can he take the
couch?

Hello skee:

Nahhh, and ad like that doesn't do a thing. The credit union isn't going to lend her any more money, so he doesn't have to worry about that. And, I doubt they have other open accounts. If they do, he should close them, no?

If he is paying for the couch, then it's his couch. If she has it, and won't give it up, he's gonna have to sue her.

He will end up paying for the couch and will have to sue for the money back.
