Hi. I am nearly 40 years old. When I was about 7 years old my mother fled what she says was an abusive relationship with my father in Puerto Rico. She moved to Pennsylvania and remarried when I was 9 years old. I never saw my biological father again, and considered my stepfather to be my father. I was told that my stepfather adopted me and I began using his name. Now I have learned that he never actually adopted me and any papers to say that he had adopted me and that I shared his name, such as my birth certificate, were false papers. Since I have used his name all of these years, do I have to do anything to make a legal, proper name change? I am now married with children.
