maximum amount of time to retrieve belongings

What is the maximum amount of time a person legally has to collect their belongings from the home they left using a police escort?
Are people who have a police escort available to them to collect their belongings from the home they left legally required to call and make an appointment or can the cops just let that person in whenever they want>
