How can we get my Dad's ashes?

Okay, my question is concerning my fathers ashes. After he died, his mother took the ashes, no questions asked. A few other things she had held on to had also been given away, not to his children but other members of the family(not very close relatives either.) Is there anything I can do before she gets a chance to take them and end up spreading the ashes without us there? Please help!
