What state are you in? Support is based off what you make so telling us a number with out knowing the rest of the needed numbers dosen't help at all. You will end up in court and you will have to show attempts at getting a job. The judge does not really care where you work. You can file for a temporary modification of support and the judge can lower it to the state minimum until you have money coming in again but they will want to see active looking. In my area if you go too long with out paying or only paying partial payments the will give you a "job sheet" and basically it has all the "temp" agencies in the area that you will have to go apply and the agency will sign off on it after your application is complete. If you fail to do this however more harsh punishments will follow.

Don't feel bad. Im in the same boat, 2 kids and wife at home with an ex that calls the support office every week harassing the caseworker and threatening to throw me in jail because of the recession, can't find a job, even after returning to school at age 36! Wake up and smell the coffee U.S. we are as poor as those little starving kids in Ethiopia. That's crazy on the over-paid parents. I was told that support couldn't take over half my wages until I only made about 40$ out of a 500$ check, for 1 child. I know a guy who only pays 128$ every 2 weeks, makes over 14$ hour, and gets a check from the Navy, now that's crazy.

    Here's what happened to me.

I had a pretty good job making about 75k a year. Best job I ever had. Well the company closed that branch and I lost the job. Slowly I began to get behind in support.Tried modification but I was told "If you made 75k that is your potential wage,no changing it" I got a job and it didn't pay much so I had to get another but still not making enough to pay my mortgage and support so I lost my house. I lived in my car for a bit until I eventually lost that. After that I lost those jobs and had to go to a shelter. (All the while I never get to see my children ever.)

I eventually attempted suicide I had had enough I just couldn't bear life any more. I was in a psyche ward for a week medicated and released back to the homeless shelter. All the while child support is accruing.

I figured since I was in a shelter I could get local jobs in walking distance so I did. I got two dishwashing jobs 16 hour days and weekends. I went to work one day and was arrested for non support and put in jail with a $3000 dollar purge! I sat in jail for 7 weeks because I am freakin broke duh! After 7 weeks they gave me a $1000 bond my sister paid out of the kindness of her heart.

Went back to the shelter and was kicked out ( they have a limit of 90 day stays) So I had to go to another county shelter. By this time I go to court I explain my situation they let me go (stet) and give me community service. "I'm like Wahh?!" How am I going to do community service since in 90 more days I will need to leave that community plus I will have no money AGAIN!?

It all became a blurr of jails, low pay jobs, and homeless shelters. Then I lost my vision in my right eye and my left eye was getting blurry as well. I met a lady that for all the utter crap I was rolling around in she saw something in me. She let me stay with her, the first time in like 12 years I slept in a real bed. I had peace for once in my life but even I knew that wouldn't last.I was trying to get disability for my eyes and post traumatic stress disorder and guess what? A summons for child support arrears.

So here I go again only this time I have no hope of ever working again. I mean who is going to hire a 50 year old blind guy with mental health issues?! In this horrible economy!? So I imagine I will do some more time and be hit with some other crazy court crap.I have felt like hurting myself again today but I have to respect my lady friends house. She doesn't need to come home to me dead. If the feelings get worse I will call authorities. I haven't slept in 2 days and anxiety is high.

No person should ever be forced to live like this. I wouldn't put this on my worst enemy. I just wanted a family because I never had one. I guess pain is just in my deck of life's cards. I did get to hold my grandbaby a few weeks ago. That felt good. Now I'm just rambling I know.

Child support ruined my life and my children's and continues. There really needs to be a more humane way of doing this.
