Has he already given up his rights as the father?

I have a 9 month old son. His father never came to the hospital and has chosen not to be around. His name is not on the birth certificate and I want it to stay that way. He has no legal rights to our son at this time. I want to know if there is any way to keep it that way or will he be able to come into my son's life whenever he feels like filing the papers? I just am not sure about how the law reads on this. Is there a statute of limitations for the father claiming the child as theirs? I don't want anything from him at all.
