Giving Temporary Custody to Grandmother in another state

Asked Aug 22, 2008, 04:44 PM — 14 Answers
I'm having a lot of trouble financially and I would like to give my mom temporary custody of my daughter until I get myself back on track. I would like to know how do I give over temporary custody of my daughter to my mother? I live in New York City and my mother lives in North Carolina. Do I have to go to North Carolina family court or a New York court?

But does he have legal rights? It doesn't matter if he doesn't visit if he has rights to her then he has to agree to it too.

He has rights but he stated he doesn't care its on me. So he will sign whatever papers pertaining to giving my mom temporary custody. So how do I go about giving my mom temporary custody?

Contact ACS (New York's Administration of Children's Services) at 212.341.0900 They handle parent's and children's rights, and if they don't have the answer, they can tell you where to turn. They should also be able to help you with resources/agencies to help you find a way to keep your child in difficult financial times.

Hello sy:

Court ain't cheap, and it ain't fast. Therefore, unless you have lots of extra money to spend, I'd just let your daughter visit your mom on an extended vacation. You don't need the courts involvement. You have legal custody. You can make such a legal decision. You won't be violating any laws by doing so.

Other than school or some doctor care excon is right you can just send her to grandma's for an extended vacation.

An "extended vacation" sounds better than going through the courts. I thought of that but I was just nervous about her being in another state and all. You know, with my mother signing her paper work for school and the doctor, I thought she may need custody to do all that. But I'll definitely rather go the cheaper route. Thanks for the suggestion.
