eviction

I have a 18 yr old, nearly 19. He does not want to help out around the house. Bad influence on 15 yr old. Pays 300 dollars a month rent. I want him to move out and be on his own. How can I make him leave?

Give him a written notice to vacate in 30 days, have him sign a receipt on your copy and wish him well. If he does not honour that, then you'll need to begin eviction procedures, as per your local laws, since he paid you rent. But may I respectfully point out that if a non-family member rented that room they wouldn't be doing chores either? Just a little perspective on that for you to consider.

I have never heard of doing chores and paying rent. That is too weird. I could see doing the chores taking place of the rent but again it just must be me.

I agree with the other posters.

It seems so wrong to have him pay rent AND do chores.

Typically, if one pays rent, one doesn’t have to do chores.

I don’t pay rent, and therefore, do chores.

If I was paying rent, then I wouldn’t be doing chores.

As the others have said, assuming no written lease, you have a month-to-month lease. Therefore, give him 30 days notice (written).

If he fails to vacate after that, start the eviction process.

You could always raise the rent, make him pay his share of utilities, get his own meals, own laundry, own phone etc. I can't imagine living at my parents house and not contributing my dad would of had my***!! He made the rules in his house if you don't like it leave!! Thats why I left, to live by my own rules!!

Dr D agrees: For the $300 he probably gets food and all the amenities of the home - pretty cheap
Angelsretort agrees: Rules our rules and in your parents house they rule until you get your own castle..
