    Divorced parents college tuition responsibilities in California
    Hi

    In my divorce decree done in 1990, payment for college tuition was left up to the jurisdiction of the court. My child is 18 and going to an expensive university in the fall. We have joint legal and visitation custody. Unfortunately, the father exercises no visitation with our child. My question is what does California law state for responsibilities of divorced parents to pay for college education. We have only one child and she has excelled in great academics and has earned her way to acceptance to a top university.

    What are my chances in court to get dad to help pay for college tuition and what portion would he be ordered to pay if court deemed it necessary.

    I am a full time mom with no income. My current husband supports our family. Our child's father makes over 200,000 per year.

    Why should child/ren from divorced parents get $$ for college while MANY children from "stable" families take out loans and get no assistance from their parents? I think it is HORRIBLE that the law can try and order/force divorced parents to pay for their child/ren college education but child/ren from a "stable" home are left to fend for themselves. Just another fine example as to how the legal system does not take in consideration all factors when awarding money in divorced situations!

    I'm from Indiana and don't know exactly how caliofornia would rule on this but I don't see how the court would make him pay for her college. He would probably have to continue support payments (one of my best friends in college received her child support payments herself not her mom once in college) and we went to a private school. I didn't get a dime of my parents money which is why my student loans are extreemly high. Like I said I don't know about Calif. But in Indiana I haven't heard of anyone being ordered to pay for college.

    There is no law for extension beyond HS graduation. That has to be agreed upon by the parents for collage tuition. Your child could always ask your ex but that's as far as it goes. Also how much are you willing to pay towards tuition ? If you try to take it to court to make " him " pay and you offer nothing then it only makes you look bitter and can be thrown out because your not taking any responsibility yourself.
