Child Custody

I have posted questions on here before & this is NOT the same case.

My neighbor has a 4 year old son & a 2 year old son. He & the children live with his parents. The kid's mother left when the youngest son was a few months old. The mother occasionally comes and gets the kids every so often, usually only for a few days at a time. The youngest child does not even know who she is. Over the past couple of years, she has not had a stable job or home. Recently, she got together with a man who has a little money. She brought the police to my neighbor's house & got the kids, since no legal custody is established. She told them they could come get them after 2 weeks. This was a few months ago. Since then, she has been getting them every couple of weeks but never keeping them for long.

Some one has just informed my neighbor that the last time the kids were with their mother, she went and got custody papers. She has not filed them because she does not have the money. This is insane! She has barely seen these kids but she is filing for custody.

My neighbor was just recently laid off from his job & can not afford an attorney. What can he do to prevent this from happening??

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks.

Saddly, I have have to say that the best way for him to stop the maddness is to beat her to court. It's another one of those cases where he should have done it as soon as she left (I'm not pointing fingers or anything plenty of people think it won't happen to them). He can shop around for an attorney but seriously he needs to file first and prove that the kids have been living with him this whole time just to make it easier when he gets to court.
