Can I change my son's first name without his father consent?

I changed my son first name and now my ex is saying I did it illegal cause I didn't have his consent.

How did you change it? A Birth certificate is a legal document and you can't just make a change. How old is the child? So yes, the father may be right. More details are needed including location (ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area. )
