My boss in production says I'm not allowed to do that because then I'd receive both a W-2 and a 1099 form, which she said would be illegal. I offered to do the writing work for free on my own time, because I'm just starting out, and anxious to build my portfolio. She said that was also forbidden, because working for free when not on the clock would make me a liability. She said that I was hired as a part-time production assistant, and that was the only job I was allowed to do.

I wanted to know if this info is correct, at least re: the tax issue of W2 and 1099 at same job. I'm in California, by the way, in case that helps.

I appreciate any assistance with this matter.
